Start-ups evolving from universities and research facilities play an important role with regard to the creation of innovative workplaces with growth potential. The study "Regional Economic Impact of Universities and Research Facilities in Rhineland-Palatinate" in 2007 reported around 120 technology-oriented start-ups in the university region of Mainz/Bingen. These spin-offs tap into lucrative business areas and markets, creating secure and sustainable workplaces. These workplaces represent new or additional jobs as they are not expected to have negative impact on established companies in the region.
Today, spin-offs from the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz are successful manufacturers of drugs for the treatment of cancer (Ganymed Pharmaceuticals AG) and immunological testing methods (Thymed GmbH) or specialists for the analysis of genetic material (GENterprise GENOMICS).
Immunological research at Mainz has received global acknowledgement over the past 30 years - the development of innovative bio-therapeutic treatment concepts is a logical consequence of this. The biotech specialists at Ganymed, for instance, develop anti-bodies designed to detect specific structures in the treatment of solid tumors. Analysts have evaluated Ganymed as one of Germany's most promising young biotech companies.
Thymed GmbH was founded in 2003 and closed a gap in the market by combining "state-of-the-art immuno-monitoring", professional consulting and the development of new immunological testing systems. This is because disease prognosis and the development of new vaccines and types of therapy depend on the definition and quantification of "specific immune responses" as milestones and biological parameters.
GENterprise GENOMICS offers molecular-biological services, such as classic DNA sequencing, next generation sequencing, production of genome and DNA libraries, cloning and PCR services, RNA analytics, development of micro-satellite markers for typing, production of custom micro-arrays and complete research project processing.
