Boehringer Ingelheim

Boehringer Ingelheim researches, develops, manufactures and markets pharmaceutical products that help improve the health and quality of life of people and animals all over the world. The family-owned Boehringer Ingelheim group was founded in 1885 and is headquartered in Ingelheim.

Boehringer Ingelheim pharmaceutical products have become standard in the treatment of diseases of the respiratory tract, the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system and in the treatment of urological and virological diseases. Additionally, there are promising products under development for metabolic disorders, cancer and thromboembolic disease.

Boehringer Ingelheim maintains global research and development facilities in seven countries and production facilities in more than twenty countries around the world. In Germany alone there are approximately 11,000 employees, of which around 3,000 work in research and development. Every year around 20% of profits from the largest business area prescription medicines are invested in R&D.

Since 1996, a series of innovative drugs from the company's own research has been approved for market registration. Examples include Spiriva® (Tiotropium) for chronic-obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) and Pradaxa® (Dabigatran), a thrombosis prophylactic. Networking with universities and scientific institutes is regarded as a catalyst for new approaches to research and shorter development times. In the end it is the patient who benefits, particularly when solutions become available for health problems that where previously treatable poorly, if at all.
