More than 50 clinics, institutes and departments work together on an interdisciplinary basis at the University Medical Center of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The University Medical Center employs a work force of approximately 6,500 and is one of the region's largest employers and an important driver of growth and innovation.
Research and teaching are inseparably connected with patient care. The scientists from Mainz develop innovative high-end medicines and combine basic and clinical research. This leads to new approaches in the battle against disease and the on-going development of diagnostic and therapeutic methods - in keeping with the Medical Center's motto "Our knowledge for your health".
Third party funding is a good indicator of Mainz's acknowledged research achievements in the field of medicine. In 2008, for example, researchers had 38.8 million Euros at their disposal. They achieved an outstanding fourth place in the 2008 fund ranking of the German Research Foundation (DFG). An essential building block is the development of a research profile; five research units and focal areas have been established: Immunology, Neurosciences, Preventive Medicine, Minimal Invasive Surgery and Tumor Medicine.
Many of the clinics at the University have specialized study centers. These have been networked by the Mainz Coordination Center for Clinical Studies (KKS) using funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to form an "Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Studies" (IZKS).
