12.-13.09.2009: Science Market 2009

Diverse range of research activities in Mainz

Experience a fascination with science live. The Science Market, an event organized by the MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE, is being held for the first time and provides insight into the broad spectrum of activities at Mainz universities and research institutions. "More than 100 scientists are here to invite the population to join in and promote an understanding of, and interest in science, particularly among children and adolescents," explained Professor Georg Krausch, the spokesman of the MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE und President of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, at the press conference for the Science Market 2009. "The project ideas offered across the scientific disciplines are impressive and reflect the rich diversity and the broad spectrum of research activities in Mainz."

Insight into the diversity of applied research and teaching at Mainz University of Applied Sciences

"Mainz University of Applied Sciences is now represented at the science market for the third time as a partner in the MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE. This year, eight contributions are shown from the three departments of technology, design and economy. They provide an impression of the diversity of applied research and teaching at the University of Applied Sciences," said Professor Gerhard Muth, President of Mainz University of Applied Sciences. The projects of the University of Applied Sciences extend from the presentation of an Internet portal to allergy prevention, and from the use of a camera as a precision measuring instrument to the presentation of business scenario concepts.

The Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature complements the Science Market with language projects

"Our projects preserve language in a historical archive using the latest technology," explained Professor Elke Lütjen-Drecoll, President of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature. "All field-names, for example, collected so far, that only a few old people still know anymore, were made accessible in an online digital database. Our latest 'speech' project documents the modern regional languages that have developed partly from traditional dialects for the first time. The methods of conventional field research and cooperative efforts, e.g. with the Federal Crime Office, are used to create and evaluate speech protocols. This will make it possible to create a model for the development of modern cultural languages. Visitors to the Science Market can test these computer terminals and search for examples in their immediate environment."

The 2009 Science Market is open on Saturday, 12 September, 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday, 13 September, 11 am to 6 pm. The Science Market is supported by the city of Mainz, the Allgemeine Zeitung, BASF AG Ludwigshafen, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma GmbH & Co. KG, the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, the Mainzer Volksbank, and the Sparkasse Mainz.
