01.04.2011: MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE decides to incorporate the Helmholtz Institute Mainz, IBM Mainz and the Institute of Molecular Biology

Extension of the comprehensive network to promote science as an economic and regional factor

The Helmholtz Institute Mainz, the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB) and the Mainz branch of IBM Deutschland GmbH will all be members of the MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE as of 1 April 2011. They now join the ranks of the 20 organizations and institutions that are being extensively linked to support science as an economic and regional factor in Mainz, along with the universities and Max Planck institutes in Mainz, the Academy of Sciences and Literature, the Institute of European History, the Roman-Germanic Central Museum, the Natural History Museum, and a range of other research institutes and companies conducting research.

"The two research institutions and IBM, as a company conducting research, are strong, significant partners beyond the borders of the city and the state, committed to active research and the accessible transfer of knowledge," explains Professor Georg Krausch, spokesman for the MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE and President of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. "We are extremely pleased about this extension of the ALLIANCE. It is our aim to render Mainz, with its diversity, density and excellent standard of knowledge-based institutions, visible nationally and internationally beyond the borders of the region. The Helmholtz Institute Mainz, the IMB and IBM are all internationally known research institutions and companies and thus an advertisement for Mainz as a center of science."

The MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE

The MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE was formed in 2008 as an initiative of the university and its medical center, the two technical universities, two Max Planck institutes, and various internationally known research institutions and companies conducting research in Mainz and the region as a whole. The aim was to further close cooperation, to strengthen the scientific potential of the city of Mainz, rendering it more visible, and to continue to forge connections between science and the economy to provide a cultural medium for new ideas and innovative products. The members of the MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE represent the scientific core of Mainz as a center, jointly employing nearly 4,000 scientists.

The MAINZ RESEARCH ALLIANCE is currently supporting the city of Mainz as a strong partner for the project "Mainz - City of Science 2011."
