Am Donnerstag, den 20. November 2025, spricht Prof. Dr. Bohdan Shumylovych am IEG über die sozialistische Konzeption der idealen Stadt unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Rolle von Fernsehen, Radio und Kybernetik: “This talk investigates the socialist conceptualization of the ideal city, with particular attention to the roles of television, radio, and cybernetics in shaping urban governance. It examines how feedback loops, data collection, and predictive planning, which are the core principles of cybernetic thought, operated as instruments of control in state-socialist cities. Using Lviv (Western Ukraine) as a case study, the analysis traces how cybernetic theories informed state visions of efficiency, surveillance, and social order within urban space. By situating these historical practices within contemporary discourses on smart cities and algorithmic governance, the study brings a socialist perspective to current debates on technological mediation and urban control.”
Bohdan Shumylovych erwarb ein Diplom in Kunstgeschichte an der Kunstakademie Lwiw, Ukraine (1993–1999) und einen Master-Abschluss in Neuerer Geschichte an der Central European University, Budapest, Ungarn (2004–2005). Im Jahr 2020 promovierte er am European University Institute, Florenz, Italien, und ist derzeit als außerordentlicher Professor an der Ukrainischen Katholischen Universität, Lwiw, Ukraine, tätig. Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit forscht er, hält öffentliche Vorträge, kuratiert thematische Ausstellungen und wirkt an Bildungsprogrammen mit.
Die Veranstaltung ist Teil der bundesweiten Vortragsreihe für gefährdete Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus der Ukraine. Die Reihe wird organisiert und finanziert von Science at Risk und dem Leibniz-Forschungsnetzwerk Östliches Europa.
